| » Jump Test
|
I didn't do well enough to skip a class but if I stay a year that's ok. I showed command of what we were taught these past three months so I will progress to the first of the advanced courses next term. This way I can at least balance studying kanji with all of the stuff in the next term that I only know at about 60% now. In otherwords it's going well. Now I have a week to take care of this visa situation, then on to job hunting.

|
Just for the weekend, visiting friends and returning the other guy's diploma they gave me. Ben is back in America. Sad to see him go but he was here long enough. Classes going well, jump test is six days away. Looking for work, binbou da, Eikaiwa visits are planned. Let's see. Looking alot at Hurd/L4 and Technorati (no connection) lately. Asked the LJ folks if they would fix it so I could mail posts in Japanese. Temporary soln will be iconv and procmail on safetydance (thanks Dan!) Wishing MC Chris would tour Japan. Had great fun at an izakaya with a bunch of friends from school. Need to fix this whole visa problem but I'm not worried yet.

It's 2:30 AM. Ben and I are on the night train to Tokyo to visit Sacha Chua and hang out. I took it upon myself to get good and drunk at the campus bar before boarding since the train didn't leave until around 12:30. It gets to Tokyo at 4:30 so we've got to find some place to go. I must write a speech for school; can anyone suggest a topic?

| » Off to Nagano |
Last night at the campus bar I was told of a weekend ski trip to Nagona; Hakuba precisely. Currently a few kilos from the hostel which is actually on the mountain I'm told. Pictures to come soon, but the southern Japanese Alps we've been driving through are beautiful. And I'm making plans for Tokyo on next weekend.
Update:> Pictures have been posted.

| » Talking Soda Machines
|
I'm settling in well at Yamasa and I like the program. I've been living in Japan for 5 months and it's so easy to forget how different so many things are hear like the talking soda machine I just bought a can of hot coffee from. I think that's the root of my argument with Laura about the future. I know she'd be happier in the JET program for at least a year then where she is now. But Japan is far away. That's hard to come to grips with until you live here.

I really like Yamasa and Okazaki so far. It's a lot of what I expected Kansai Gaidai to be like. Nobody here has attempted to speak to me in English, I understand them nearly perfectly, and when I speak, it is clear and understandable. I don't know why, but I am very comfortable speaking to all of them. My apartment is a regular Japanese apartment, not some crazy mix of an American college dorm with tatami-tiled bedrooms. Today was crazy because of the placement testing. There where about 20 new students and about half of us could already speak some Japanese, but they singled me out; apparently my written test score wasn't so great but my interview was great (and hard and fun) so they made me come back for another interview, a very hard test I couldn't read and a composition. I was the student to get all of this. Anyway, I'll find out tommorow hnw I did. Oh my apartment is great, a regular Japanese apartment. I'm working on it tonight.

Cob and I are heading back from Fukuoka to Osaka today by regular trains. It will take about 12 hours. We fortunately do get to see a lot of beautiful Yamato. I miss Ryota's Okaasan already; she even made awesome bento for Cob and I.

| » New Year
|
It's getting close to midnight here in Shimoyamada. When the clock strikes, Ryota, Ryota's sister Momoko, her friends Yuuko and Maki, Ryota's friend Taich and his sister, Okaasan, Cob and I will eat special soba, drink a little Nihonshu, and trek out to this particular jinja. It's cold and we expect more snow. I called my mom today; hadn't spoken to here in something close to a year. I let Cob cut my hair last night; see the pic. My hat sticks like velcro now o(^-^)o I hope all of my family and friends are well. I'll save more reflections for later.

| » Onsen in Shijimi and Porno
|
Today was a relaxing day after last night's drunken fun with two of Ryota's childhood friends: Yomei and Taich. Ryota found a discount coupon for a local natural onsen in the next town of Shijimi (Ryota lives in Shimoyamada) so we went and it was great. On the way back we stopped to check out a vending machine porno store (pic link soon) before coming home. Ryota's mom has been making us great food; tonight was kushikatsu.
